Reading (McGraw-Hill Wonders)
· I am committed to having your child reading fluently by the end of the year. Our class schedule includes an uninterrupted 90 minute reading block every day. This will benefit your child substantially. The reading instruction time includes:
o Whole Group Instruction
o Small Group Instruction / A.R.
o Strategic Intervention
· There will be Reading/Spelling homework every week beginning August 15. You may find all information needed to complete Reading homework in the sheet protectors of your child's folder.
Accelerated Reader (A.R.)
· Children read A.R. books and then take a test on these books on the computer. The books are leveled (you may hear your child say that he/she is on a certain color “dot.”) As students make several 100’s on a level, I will move them up to the next level. You should see improvement in your child’s reading ability as the year progresses.
DIBELS
Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills – a set of procedures and measures for assessing early literacy skills. They are designed to be short (one minute) fluency measures used to regularly monitor the development of early literacy and early reading skills.
· Three Administrations
- First Administration (Beginning of Year): August/September
- Second Administration (Middle of Year): December/January
- Third Administration (End of Year): April/May
· The tests focused on in first grade are Phoneme Segmentation, Nonsense Word Fluency, and Oral Reading Fluency.
· Students should be able to say the individual sounds in a given word, blend letters together to read a non-sense word, and read a passage on grade level with appropriate fluency.
Math Investigations
· Our class schedule includes 90 minutes of math instruction every day. Last year we adopted an exciting new math curriculum. I am looking forward to using this curriculum to help teach the common core math standards.
· Please expect weekly homework.
Homework
· Parents are key in making homework a positive experience for their child. Please make it a priority and provide the necessary supplies and a quiet learning environment. Parents may help students, but should not do their homework for them.
Reading at Home
· Please make it a priority to have your child read for at least 20 minutes each night. This will help your child build fluency and comprehension skills. You will be amazed by his or her reading improvement as the year progresses.
· Please record your child’s reading on the Reading Log found in the Daily Folder.
Birthdays
· If you choose to pass out birthday invitations in the classroom, please invite everyone. Please keep in mind that these are young children, and we do not want them to feel left out or feelings to be hurt. (If you do not wish to invite everyone in the class, then simply mail or pass out invitations outside of school.)
· You may also announce your child’s birthday on our digital sign for his or her special day. The fee is $10.00 and forms are in the office.
. If you would like to send a birthday treat for the class to enjoy, please drop off in the office and we will celebrate as a class.

*** After the first couple of weeks, please try to gradually encourage students independence by allowing them to walk to the classroom by themselves. This promotes self confidence and will make them emotionally healthier. It will also allow them to settle in quickly and begin their day with ease.
